Synonym is a Bitcoin software company building an ecosystem of open products and protocols — including the Bitkit wallet, Blocktank Lightning service provider, and the Pubky web — for a self-sovereign digital economy.
The next chapter of Bitcoin is not just a better store of value — it is an entirely new substrate for digital life. Synonym is one of the most ambitious teams trying to build that substrate. Founded in 2020 by John Carvalho and Paolo Ardoino, the company describes its mission as the Atomic Economy: a stack where identity, payments, and data are all owned by the user, with Bitcoin as the underlying settlement layer.
That mission is expressed across a tightly integrated product line. Bitkit is a self-custodial Bitcoin and Lightning wallet designed for everyday use. Blocktank is a Lightning service provider that lets apps and wallets buy inbound liquidity and channels on demand. Pubky is an open protocol for portable identity and a censorship-resistant social web. Together they describe a complete alternative stack to today's platform-controlled internet.
For us, this is exactly the territory the Fulgur thesis was designed to cover. Lightning unlocks programmable, instant value transfer; self-sovereign identity unlocks programmable reputation; together they unlock applications that simply cannot exist on traditional rails. Synonym is one of very few teams building all the pieces, and shipping them as open protocols rather than walled products.
The market opportunity is the entire user-facing internet. Today, every app rents identity from Apple, Google, or Meta and rents payments from Visa or Stripe. The Atomic Economy proposes a world where users own those primitives directly. That is a generational shift, and Bitcoin is the only neutral monetary layer credible enough to anchor it.
We have backed Synonym since 2021 and continue to support the team as they ship the protocols that will let the next billion people transact, communicate, and identify themselves on rails they actually own.
